Justin Pearson’s Twitter profile used to read, appropriately, “I give good headache.”
Well, San Diego record label Three One G today released a video online today from Deaf Club — Pearson’s latest super-group blast of hardcore punk – and, while it hints at the glory days of The Locust, it doesn’t just mimeograph them.
Yes, yes, Pearson, Locust alumnus on loan from Dead Cross and Planet B, barks and roars over the cacophony of “Bright Side of Death,” but the band – Brian Amalfitano (ACxDC), Scott Osment (Weak Flesh), Jason Klein (Run With The Haunted), and Leo Ulfelder (Fissure) – thrashes in a more traditional, maybe more typical-trajectory explosion of punk than Plague Soundscapes. There’s less attention to shifting time signatures than, say, the deafening, drive-through-the-night refrain of crunching guitars.
That’s not to say this stuff mimics the hardcore of the 80s. This is still highly angular, highly aggressive, and not terribly interested in hooks – more than anything, it’s a quick straight-razor cut across the throat. I can’t wait for the EP.
