Nonagon sound positively, well, positive on “Tuck The Long Tail Under,” its offering from a new split seven-inch with Cincinnati’s Knife The Symphony out on Phratry and Controlled Burn Records.
That’s not to say the trio’s gone all doughy or doe-eyed on its first vinyl outing since 2013’s excellent The Last Hydronaut. The closing third of this thing still has got some bite, some slamming, sinister intent. But it’s notable how bright-eyed the trio sounds for a punk band for most of the track, whose electric guitars flutter over driving bass and drums. They’ve always been a cohesive unit but more at the service of slitting throats, thus all of the Dischord and Touch-and-Go references. Here, they wax Husker. And I like it.
The vinyl version of the limited single, available via Bandcamp, will feature one song from each band. The included download card will offer listeners a couple of bonus demo tracks. Asking price: $4. Now that’s punk. – Justin Vellucci, Swordfish, April 11, 2018
