The cover co-opts the psychological terror of a Francis Bacon portrait, but don’t be fooled. This is a safe record not far removed from the mid-90’s alt-rock on which Placebo cut its teeth.
There’s dirgy post-grunge, Nine Inch Nails-style electronica and radio-pop waiting for its “O.C.” guest-spot, but someone should tell Brian Malko not every song requires that forced-diaphragm wail, no matter how inviting.
