Review: Matmos – Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast

Passing listeners will have trouble wrapping their arms and ears around this high-art concept album, which uses sonic pastiche and genre-mutating frameworks to profile the likes of Ludwig Wittgenstein and William S. Burroughs.

It may be the precise opposite of “easy listening,” but it’s also a groundbreaking, if not brilliant, example of character study.

Favorite Track: “Semen Song for James Bidgood”

Grade: B+ – Jetty, May 2006
