Passing listeners will have trouble wrapping their arms and ears around this high-art concept album, which uses sonic pastiche and genre-mutating frameworks to profile the likes of Ludwig Wittgenstein and William S. Burroughs.
It may be the precise opposite of “easy listening,” but it’s also a groundbreaking, if not brilliant, example of character study.
